Luke is the Production Supervisor at our Smithfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The facility processes 70% of Sydney’s household recycling, sorting around 6,000 household bins every hour.
Luke began with Visy as a Graduate Accountant in 2021.
“Visy was a business I’d not only heard of but had seen on packaging and the sides of trucks,” Luke recalls.
“I knew it was a large, diverse company and that played a big role in my decision to apply. I saw the opportunity for progression if I put in the effort.”
Just two and a half years after starting, Luke made the move into operations, which he describes as a “turning point” in his career.
“I always thought I’d move into an operations or managerial role further down the track, once I had more experience. There was an opening at the MRF, and the operations manager gave me a shot”.
Coming from an accounting background he says, “it’s incredibly rewarding seeing the numbers I used to manage on a spreadsheet in the flesh, like processed tonnes”.
It’s the challenging nature of the work at Visy that drives him.
“Each day brings new and exciting challenges that test and ultimately grow my experience”.
Luke’s worked on several key projects at the facility including upgrading glass and optical sorting processes.
Looking ahead, Luke is focused on continuing to improve operational efficiency and safety at the facility.
“At Visy, our people are our number one priority,” Luke explains. “I’m always thinking about how we can make the workplace safer and more efficient, as well as reduce the physical demands on our team.”
One of the things that stands out most to Luke about his time at Visy is the support he’s received from his colleagues. “Whether it’s the operational staff on the ground or the corporate teams, everyone is passionate about what they do,” he says.
“Despite the size and scale of the company, there’s a family-like culture among peers, which makes it an enjoyable place to work.”
Luke encourages anyone considering a role at Visy to take the leap. “Visy is the perfect business to grow and build a career,” he says.
“Visy offers a lot of opportunities for those who are willing to work hard and grow. Put your hand up for as much as you can and gain as much experience and exposure as possible.”
