A Covid-era decision to be closer to her family led Emma to apply for a job with Visy’s Health, Safety and Environment Team.

As a HSE Project Lead, she is responsible for delivering continuous improvements projects for the HSE Team. Currently, these include an updated framework for operational training and competency, HSE communications and mental health initiatives.

She values the people she works with both in her team and across Visy’s divisions.

“The HSE Team, although dispersed across the country, are so wonderful to work with. There is a real ‘team’ feel and this connection and collaboration with others is important to me.”

“It still blows me away how many people I meet that have been working at Visy for over 30 years. Clearly, there is good reason for that.”

Together with HR, she’s been working on a new psychosocial health and safety strategy. It will help proactively manage potential workplace hazards that may impact employee health, such as job demands, organisational change or bullying and harassment.

“I think everyone has either experienced mental health challenges themselves or supported another in some way. We can all play our part to raising awareness of what psychosocial hazards are in the workplace and how they present simply by sharing our own experiences and storytelling.”

“As with physical safety, we have a responsibility as a workplace to provide a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health and wellbeing of our people.”

She says there are significant business benefits from safe and mentally healthy workplaces.

“Improved worker engagement, motivation and job satisfaction leading to higher retention and an overall increase in productivity.”

Her advice for anyone considering applying for a role at Visy: “Do it! There is so much potential for professional and personal growth.”
